9/4 Reading Reflection

From the information about the Itsukushima Shrine, I found three points that were particularly important and interesting:

1) The main shrine was constructed in 593 by Saeki Kuramoto. The island of Miyajima has been worshipped as a goddess by many clans. While the shrine dwindled in importance during the Kamakura period, Mori Motonari worked to restore the shrine after 1555.

2)The Itsukushima shrine is a very large shrine containing many different buildings. These buildings have fusions of Japanese architecture and architecture of other cultures like China, India and Korea. The main shrine ultilizes a type of architecture called Kiritsuma-ryonagare, which involves lattice windows and doors to form intricate and beautiful designs.

3) What importance does the shrine hold today? Is it still as important to the Japanese people, or is it more of a tourist attraction? Does this shrine have any controversial components like the Edo Tokyo Museum or the Yasukuni Shrine?
